October 18th – 24th National Estate Planning Awareness Week

october is national estate planning awareness week

For Estate Planning Week, Consider this Estate Planning Awareness Topic: How an estate plan can prevent someone from squandering your assets before or upon your death.

During National Estate Planning Month and Estate Planning Awareness Week, I’m offering specific information about the many ways an estate plan can benefit anyone.

You don’t have to be among the super-wealthy to have an estate plan or appreciate Estate Planning Week. You do need to have assets. Assets include a home, automobiles, recreational vehicles, money in the bank, a retirement plan or IRA and more. Today, assets also include digital assets like music and art.

What I’m going over here is how an estate plan can protect your assets from being squandered even by those heirs you assign as recipients. This includes prior to and after your death. Sometimes there are family members who have substance abuse problems as well as mental health issues. While you want to distribute assets to these loved ones, you also want to make sure other beneficiaries are protected and that the financial assets you leave are distributed in the way you want them to be.

A clearly written estate plan can protect your minor children and adult beneficiaries from bad decisions, outside influences, creditors and even an overbearing spouse or partner.

An estate plan clearly describes how you want your assets distributed, to whom and when. Every desire you have can be put into your estate plan, which must be carried out to the letter.

In the best of circumstances, an estate plan relieves your loved ones from having to make difficult and important decisions about finances, end of life care and more. And even when you do have difficult or otherwise troublesome beneficiaries an estate plan is even more important. It’s a great way to protect your loved ones from themselves and each other.

In addition to protecting your beneficiaries, an estate plan can also help your loved ones avoid probate and reduce taxes. Give my office a call at 404-370-0696 if you would like to discuss creating an estate plan, updating, or reviewing a current estate plan. The week of October 18th through the 24th is the official National Estate Planning Awareness Week. It’s a great time to schedule time to create an estate plan for anyone 18 and older.
