November is National Family Caregivers Month

Family caregivers are special people, giving their attention out of love.

Do you give thanks for the family caregivers in your life?

Traditionally, the month of November is associated with Thanksgiving. It’s associated with the holiday in which we give thanks for all of the goodness we experience in life.

If anyone is experiencing the services provided by these caregivers, they really do belong at the top of the list of things for which to be grateful.

I welcome the focus on family caregivers of family members and it makes perfect sense. November is a meaningful time to recognize and thank family caregivers.

Recent data shows a sharp rise in unpaid caregivers. The number increased by 9.5 million, reaching about 53 million Americans. That means more than one in five people now serve as caregivers. The same reports show a concerning trend: caregivers are in worse health than just a few years ago. The COVID-19 likely contributed through isolation, stress, and limited support.

Many caregivers are over age 50. They often balance jobs, families, and caregiving duties. This makes them especially vulnerable to burnout and health decline.

Take time this month to recognize and support the caregivers in your life. Small acts of appreciation and practical help can make a real difference.

And, by all means, encourage family caregivers to actively seek the help and support they need on their own behalf.
