November is National Family Caregivers Month

Do you give thanks for the family caregivers in your life?

Traditionally, the month of November is associated with Thanksgiving, the holiday in which we give thanks for all of the goodness we experience in life.

If anyone is experiencing the services provided by a family caregiver, that caregiver really does belong at the top of the list of things for which to be grateful.

I, for one, am happy and it makes perfect sense to me that November is also the month in which we acknowledge and show our deep appreciation for family caregivers.

In the most recent report updated in 2020, the number of unpaid family caregivers in the U.S. has increased by 9.5 million from 2015 to 2021. That brings the total number of family caregivers to 53 million. According to the report, family caregivers now encompass more than one in five Americans. It also reveals a sad truth: Family caregivers are in worse health today compared to five years ago. I’m sure the pandemic has contributed to this as a result of lockdowns, quarantines and a full year of isolation. Also considering the fact that nearly half of all caregivers are over age 50, many of them have jobs and families to tend to. It’s no wonder they are vulnerable to decline in their own health.

So, this month, with loosened safety restrictions, please make extra efforts to recognize and assist your family caregiver(s) in special ways. And, by all means, encourage caregivers to actively seek the help and support they need on their own behalf.
