Here’s To The Original Caregiver – Mom And All Those Who Mother

Mother’s Day is one of those days that always fills me with great joy and gratitude for not just my mother, or for being a mom myself, but for every person, man or woman, who takes mothering to heart. The men and women who care for our elderly parents while we are working. The men and women who help us raise our children while we pursue careers. Mothering is caregiving. And you do not have to have given birth to a child to know how to mother.

I recently came across a comment the comedienne Amy Poehler made about the indispensable role of caregivers at an event she attended on Mother’s Day:

“I have thought very hard and long about what has influenced me over the past couple of years, and … it was the women who helped me take care of my children … who come to my house and help me raise my children. And for you working women who are out there tonight who get to do what you get to do because there are wonderful people who help you at home, I would like to take a moment to thank those people, some of whom are watching their children right now, while you’re at this event. Those are people who love your children as much as you do, and who inspire them and influence them and on behalf of every sister and mother and person who stands in your kitchen and helps you love your child, I say thank you and I celebrate you tonight.”

Most of us are not nearly as privileged as Ms. Poehler, which makes us even more thankful for the many caregivers in our lives. We all know how to mother each other. And, of course, those mothers who actually provide the passage for new life onto the planet deserve special recognition for the jobs they do of raising children to the very best of their abilities. Thank you, mom. Thank you to all of the caregivers who tend to the elderly and those with Alzheimer’s disease who work lovingly tending to life’s ever-unfolding needs.
