Caregiver Appreciation Day Is February 18 – Let’s Show Them We Care

On Caregiver Appreciation Day, how will you show you care?

Caregivers are the unsung heroes of our age. The majority of caregivers are unpaid family members or friends. And even those who are paid for their services, their compassion and caring is inspiring and worthy of recognition.

Of the more than 66 million caregivers in the U.S. more than a third of them are between 50 and 64 years of age. Roughly a quarter of them are between 35 and 49, and another quarter are very young, 18 to 34. https://www.ctsnet.edu/a-time-to-celebrate-and-honor-caregivers/

For loved ones living with Alzheimer’s, dementia-related diseases, and chronic illness, caregivers embody the patience of saints. Caregiving requires very special characteristics that so many of us do not possess. And many caregivers have had to develop these characteristics out of necessity. How adequately can we ever truly express our gratitude and appreciation?

My mother has dementia, and I cannot tell you how grateful I am to both her paid caregiver and my father for being there to soothe mom and attend to her many needs. I know she is lovingly cared for, yet I also know the demands are endless. Whenever I can, I go to visit and give my dad and the caregiver a brief respite. I send thank you cards to the caregiver regularly and give small gifts from time to time.

You can express your appreciation for the caregiver in your life any day of the week, month or year. It doesn’t have to be on February 18th—Caregiver Appreciation Day.

Any token of appreciation be it just a few hours or a day off, a lovely gift, a card, any kind of recognition will, I promise you, do wonders for your caregiver. Caregiving is the ultimate act of love. It’s impossible to imagine where we would be without them and their valuable services. So, let’s shower the caregivers in our lives with some extra love this month.

If you are a caregiver, please accept my most sincere and heartfelt thanks for all you do.
