You may think to yourself that most of these people don’t have much. Well, first of all, that may not be the case. And, you don’t need to have a lot of possessions to decide who you would want to pay your bills and make other time-sensitive financial decisions if you are unable to make those decisions for yourself. For example, if a lease needs to be terminated, or a cell phone bill paid, or personal property removed from an apartment. That is the role a financial power of attorney fulfills. And, if there were complications that occurred during your illness and you were not able to make medical decisions yourself, who would you want to make those decisions on your behalf? For example, if you are intubated with a machine to help you breath and cannot speak. That is the role of a health care power of attorney.

Likewise a simple will allows you to declare who will take care of your minor children (children under the age of 18) and how your estate, however meager it may be, will be distributed.
